About a month ago I went to Joshua Tree National Park with my brother and my cousins who live in Ridgecrest. We hiked the California Riding and Hiking Trail (weird name, I know) to Quail Mountain from the Juniper Flats staging area.

Camping on the Colorado River
Last weekend my sister, her boyfriend, and his sister drove out to the Colorado River for a weekend of boating and floating.
Pinnacles National Park (NP #51), California
Promoted from its national monument status in January of 2013, Pinnacles National Park (map / wiki) became the 59th and most recently added national park in the system.
Big Surf in Big Sur, California
I’ve mentioned it before, but I’ll say it again here. I’m drawn to driving next to bodies of water. If you look back at my route through the states it’s clear that I gravitate to river banks, lake shores, and ocean coastlines.
Channel Islands National Park (NP #50), California
Channel Islands National Park (map / wiki) is the fourth national park I’ve had to access by ferry (the others being Dry Tortugas NP, Isle Royal NP, and Kenai Fjords NP). Editor’s Choice I first visited Lassen Volcanic National Park (map / wiki) two years ago on a weeklong “pilot” road trip with my buddy Erik. He and I hiked half way up Lassen Peak, but because there was still a good amount of snow on the ground and we had to turn back. We drove Read More …
Redwood National Park (NP #35), California
People like to ask me what my favorite national park is, and I’ll usually give them a prepackaged answer, “Oh, I don’t know – that’s like asking me which is my favorite kid!” but then I’ll rattle off a few, “Maybe Big Bend NP in Texas for its vastness.. or Acadia NP in Read More …
